Readmission FAQ

Review the information below to help you make an informed academic decision about your future educational endeavors.

  1. Should I apply for reinstatement or readmission?
  2. Consult the chart below to determine whether you should apply for reinstatement or readmission.

    Apply for reinstatement if...

    You were academically dismissed at the end of your last semester of attendance.

    OR

    You withdrew from your last semester of attendance and have withdrawn from a previous semester.

    OR

    You withdrew from your first semester of attendance.

    OR

    You withdrew from your last semester of attendance and had below a 2.00 GPA.

    Apply for readmission if...

    You left the University with at least a 2.00 GPA and did not withdraw from your last semester of attendance (excluding summer/winter term).

    OR

    You were on academic probation during your last semester of attendance and one or more semesters have passed since you last registered for courses.

  3. What happens to my application after it has been submitted?
  4. The Student Success Office will review completed applications in the order in which they are received. Before applying, visit your student account to determine if you have any registration blocks. Your application cannot move forward in the review process if you have a judicial or financial block.   5. May I meet with someone in person to discuss my situation?
  6. You can meet with an academic advisor in your college to discuss your readiness to return to the University of Maryland for the following semester, as well as course selection, registration, and major options. Send questions about your decision, deadlines, or the application to the Student Success Office via email at:
    rr-admit@umd.edu.

  7. I am an international student. Are there additional documents I must submit in order to reenroll?
  8. International students wishing to return to the University of Maryland in F-1 or J-1 status should contact Katrina Knudsen (knudsenk@umd.edu) in the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office for instructions about the required documentation for the creation of an I-20 or DS-2019 document. It is recommended that you contact Katrina as soon as your reenrollment/reinstatement application has been submitted.

  9. May I register for the Fall or Spring semester before I receive my readmission decision?
  10. You are not eligible to register until you are officially readmitted to the University of Maryland. If you are readmitted, you may also have to resolve registration blocks before registering.

  11. I have an unpaid balance on my student account. Am I eligible to apply for reenrollment before it is resolved?
  12. Please apply by the appropriate deadline even if you have a financial block. However, we are unable to finish processing your application until we receive notification that your payment is received. You may expedite this process by obtaining a financial clearance slip from the Office of the Bursar and sending it to: Student Success Office, 0110 Hornbake Library, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742. You can alternatively ask the Bursarís office to email us at rr-admit@umd.edu.

  13. I plan to apply for readmission for the Fall or Spring semester. Am I eligible to register for Winter or Summer courses?
  14. Students readmitted for the fall semester can also register for summer term, and students readmitted for the spring semester can also register for winter term.

  15. When will I receive a decision? How will I be notified?
  16. Readmission applicants should receive a decision within 10 business days of submitting a complete application. You will be notified via email when your decision is ready. Please note that the review process timeline is extended for students who have a financial block, judicial block, or need to change their major.

  17. I have been approved for readmission. What happens next?
  18. Meet with an academic advisor in your major to have the mandatory advising block removed, discuss courses, and review your remaining degree requirements.

  19. I am ineligible to reenroll into my major. How can I change my major?
  20. Some students may be asked to change their majors upon reentry to the University. Please see the Changing Your Major section of the website.

  21. Whom should I contact if I have additional questions?
  22. Contact an academic advisor directly to discuss course selection, registration, and major options. Send questions about your decision, deadlines, or the application to the Student Success Office via email to rr-admit@umd.edu.

  23. Iíve already earned a degree at the University of Maryland but wish to return. What should I do?
  24. You should apply for readmission to the University. If you just wish to take a few courses, you should indicate on the application that you wish to be non-degree seeking. However, if you wish to earn a degree, you must select a new major (you may not return to your previous major). Before you will be approved for readmission, you will need to develop a graduation plan for your new major. Contact the academic college of your new major to talk with an advisor. Please ask your advisor to email confirmation of your major change to rr-admit@umd.edu.
